Preventing Distracted Driving

Driving is a privilege that should be taken very seriously by everyone who gets behind the wheel of a vehicle. However, at times it may seem tempting to just check one text or eat a sandwich while you are driving. This greatly increases the likelihood of getting into an accident and risking the safety of others on the road.

According to the Automobile Association of America (AAA), here are some ways in which you can prevent distracted driving.

Make a Pact to Stay off Your Mobile Device

The best thing you can do while driving is to promise yourself that your phone is going to stay in your handbag or console at all times. If you absolutely must make a call or read a text, find a safe place to pull off and park your car before doing so. This sets a good example for any teens or children in your car, too.

Plan Before You Leave

If you need to use your GPS for directions, input them before you set off on your journey. Brush your hair, apply lipstick, eat your snack or change your radio prior to driving. Once you get into the habit of doing this, it becomes second nature.

Secure People or Items in Your Vehicle

Whether you are driving solo or with children or animals, it is imperative that everything is fastened in your vehicle. Strap in any babies who require car seats and impress upon older kids how important it is to stay belted at all times. Safely secure your animals. By doing so, you minimize the likelihood of having to reach into the backseat while driving.

And, stow any loose objects so nothing rolls around while you are driving, forcing you to take your attention off the road to retrieve it. You do not want anything to fall under the gas pedal or accelerator, thus creating the potential for an accident.Â
