Sharing the road with trucks

by | Apr 16, 2022 | Truck Accidents

Many drivers may feel uncomfortable when they are in close proximity to trucks. While people cannot control the actions taken by a truck driver, they can make sure that they drive safely near these vehicles.

Understanding certain details about large vehicles can help people prevent collisions. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration says that because trucks are so much larger and heavier, it takes longer for them to brake and accelerate. Additionally, it is harder for people to maneuver them. Drivers should keep these details in mind when they encounter trucks on the road.

Know how to pass

As people approach a truck, they may simply want to pass the vehicle as quickly as possible. However, drivers need to use caution when passing. They should make sure they get into the left lane. Additionally, they should be aware of the wind gust created by the truck. This can make it more difficult for people to control over their own cars.

Drivers should use extra caution if they are in a hilly area. The weight of a truck usually makes these vehicles accelerate as they go downhill. Because of this, people should not pass until the road is level.

Understand blind spots

According to the American Trucking Association, trucks have large blind spots. Truck drivers may not be able to see passenger vehicles that are immediately behind or beside them. People could unintentionally increase their chances of being in an accident if they drive in a blind spot.

To protect themselves, people should leave several car lengths between them and the truck when they drive behind it. When people are beside a truck, they should make sure they can see the driver’s face in the side mirror. If people cannot see a truck’s mirrors, the driver likely cannot see them.

If drivers know how to share the road, they can decrease their chances of getting into a collision.
