Driving a motorcycle in North Carolina comes with slightly different rules and regulations than driving other types of motor vehicles. The unique nature of motorcycles means drivers need to know how to handle the two-wheeled vehicle on and off the paved road.
Completion of a motorcycle safety course is a requirement for a learner’s permit according to the NC Department of Transportation. For individuals under the age of 18, a parent or guardian must sign a consent form before training can begin. The state DMV office conducts the tests Tuesdays through Thursdays by appointment only. The individual must pass a skills test for off-road use and a knowledge test. A commercial, full-provisional or regular license is necessary to obtain the motorcycle endorsement.
The American Motorcyclist lists the laws specific to the state. Headlights should be on during the daytime as well as the nighttime. The state does not allow lane splitting like other states namely California. There are no restrictions on the sound level, handlebar height or helmet speakers. Carrying a passenger comes with additional restrictions such as a seat for the passenger to ride on and corresponding footrests.
Like any motorized vehicle operating on the roadways, liability insurance is a requirement. The state has its own minimum requirements for coverage. This insurance covers the operator’s liability in the event of an accident for both property damage and bodily injury.
One important thing to remember when operating a motorcycle on the road is to follow the laws. Red lights, stop signs and other traffic signs should be followed for safe driving.
